John Huss (1374 – 1415) who lived about 100 years before Martin Luther, was a protestant reformer in what is now called the Czech Republic. He was greatly influenced by the writings of John Wickliffe from Great Briton. He was martyred by being burnt at the stake. But the reformation he started flourished. Jan Zizkov and Amos Kominsky were influenced by John Huss. The protestant reformation continued to expand until 1620 when the Catholic government crushed it. Many of the protestants were killed, others went underground and still others were exiled into Germany. Count Zinzendorf (1700 – 1760) in Herrnhut, Germany, began taking in refugees from the Czech lands. A Spiritual awakening took place in Herrnhut, which was compared to the outpouring in the 2 Chapter of Acts. Through this outpouring, 24 hour 7 day a week prayer was etablished which lasted 100 years. A missions movement grew out of Herrnhut which touched every continent. |
